Many communities in India believe that at the onset of Vaisakh, on the 13th or 14th April, Maa Ganga descended from heaven and came to Earth. And from then on, Earth has its river Ganga. And when Maa Ganga was descending to Earth, her force was so overwhelming that Lord Shiva had to contain her power by catching her in his jata to save the Earth from flood. For the Sikh community, Baisakhi is celebrated not just as a New Year or the beginning of harvest but also as the date of Guru Gobind Singh’s coronation as the tenth guru.
