What most people don’t know is that there are 3 different ways to celebrate the auspicious festival of Teej, known by three different names like:

  • Hariyali Teej
  • Kajari Teej
  • Hartalika Teej

Hariyali Teej- On this day, women worship the moon. Hariyali Teej signifies greenery and so women wear green-colored dresses and bangles to mark the auspicious occasion. They also make merry by singing and dancing to various traditional songs. Hariyali Teej is also known as Chhoti Teej and Shravana Teej.

Kajari Teej- It is the time to perform the sacred puja of neem amidst various rituals and traditions. Women sing various Kajari songs in praise of Lord Krishna.

Hartalika Teej - This festival is celebrated at the onset of monsoon, on the third day of the half of the North Indian lunar. Hartalika Teej is falling on 11th August 2021 this year.

What is Teej

Teej is celebrated mostly in northern India. It is celebrated by Hindu women in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh. The festivities start at the onset of monsoon season in India. Married Hindu women honor this festival by fasting for the health and goodwill of their husbands, children, and themselves.

Reflecting on the history of this auspicious festival, it is believed by Hindu devotees that on this day, Lord Shiva accepted goddess Parvati as his wife after 108 rebirths. These women seek marital bliss and harmony in their homes by worshipping lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati by observing a fast.

Various mouth-watering delicacies are consumed on the occasion of Hartalika Teej, some of which are: Ghewar, Khasta Kachori, Dal Baati Churma, Gujiya and many more. Women usually celebrate the festival of Teej by coming together and gathering at a nearby temple or garden for puja. They form a semi-circle while an idol of Goddess Parvati is placed in the middle. The Hartalika Puja begins with holy offerings of flowers, sweets, and fruits while all the ladies narrate the holy Teej Katha together.
